Sometimes you start something and it just keeps going. The PGVLE is just that for me

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare education, the Postgraduate Virtual Learning Environment (PGVLE) a Moodle based platform started in 2020 continues to grow and has managed to consolidate its foundations sufficiently and to the point that it is being considered for national scale up. As we expanded to 30000 users this year, we already put in the case and successfully secured funding for another significant milestone—expanding to 60,000 users by January 2025.

What is the PGVLE?

For those who don’t know, the PGVLE is a digital learning environment I whipped together to meet the needs of postgraduate teachers and learners. It is Moodle-based, and offers a comprehensive range of resources, from narrated presentations and interactive PowerPoints to quizzes and assessments tailored for medical professionals. Through robust online modules and an interactive learning approach, the PGVLE aligns with current educational needs by providing content that is accessible, scalable, and adaptable to diverse learning paths in healthcare.

More about the framework and initial vision behind PGVLE can be explored in detail on our blog, where each article delves into the nuances of building a resilient, user-centered educational system for postgraduate learners.

Rapid Growth and Future Prospects

The planned expansion of PGVLE to 60,000 users marks a significant milestone. However, this is only the beginning. With NHS England’s support, PGVLE is set to become a national standard for healthcare education, bringing online learning to healthcare professionals across the country. This collaboration will allow NHS England to address education and training needs more efficiently, offering consistent, high-quality resources to healthcare professionals at every level.

The Benefits of National Scale-Up

National scaling of PGVLE will address several key challenges within postgraduate medical education:

  1. Increased Accessibility: By expanding nationally, PGVLE will ensure that all healthcare professionals have access to standardised, high-quality training resources.
  2. Streamlined Training: The platform’s centralised approach will facilitate streamlined training that aligns with NHS England’s standards.
  3. Flexible Learning Paths: With diverse resources suited to various specialties, the PGVLE enables tailored educational journeys, empowering each learner to focus on relevant skills and knowledge.

Looking Ahead

The journey of PGVLE reflects a commitment to fostering a community of knowledgeable, capable healthcare professionals. By January 2025, PGVLE will not only have grown in numbers but will also be a crucial tool for healthcare education on a national scale. We are working with multiple regions and specialty groups to onboard proactive programmes onto the PGVLE

This platform’s story is one of growth, impact, and vision. The commitment to advancing postgraduate learning in healthcare is unwavering, and with NHS England by our side, PGVLE is ready to lead the way in shaping the future of medical education across the UK. rogress and get in-depth updates, visit u-ahmed.com where we’ll be sharing more about this journey.
