I’m Usman Ahmed, a consultant trauma & orthopaedic surgeon with near 20 years’ experience within the NHS.
Training
I qualified in 2007 from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and spent my early training in the West Midlands and South West. After securing a run-through post in the West Midlands in 2010, I went on to complete my higher surgical training on the Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme, obtaining my FRCS(Tr&Orth) in 2017 and formal completion of training in 2018.
I was awarded a travelling fellowship to the Endoklinik (Hamburg, Germany) by the British Orthopaedic Association in 2017.
I undertook sub-specialist training in Sheffield as the Cavendish Arthroplasty Fellow. My fellowship experience covers all aspects of hip and knee replacement surgery, including primary, complex primary, and revision (re-do) surgery for infection, loosening, instability, and fractures.
Academic & Research
My diverse experience includes a lab-based doctoral degree, leading to the award of a PhD in 2013. I have authored or collaborated on over 30 peer-reviewed papers with 600+ citations and 2 book chapters, and have presented research work more than 75 times internationally and nationally. See Publications for the full list.
Leadership & Education
In 2017 I was appointed to the British Orthopaedic Association’s National Clinical Leadership Programme (supported by Health Education England) and developed the Birmingham Orthopaedic Network.
I am enthusiastic about teaching, and hold roles across various HEE West Midlands committees, including two training programme director roles. I am a regular faculty member on Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Basic Biomechanics in Orthopaedics (BBiOrth), and take part in local medical and surgical teaching from medical students through to FRCS(Tr&Orth) candidates. [CHECK: still current? Original text says “As of Jan 2021, I joined the BOA Education and Careers Committee as head of digital and simulation” — confirm this is still your role, or update it.]
In August 2019 I was appointed to the NHS England Clinical Entrepreneurship Programme, and in October 2019 I was seconded to Health Education England as a Training Programme Director for Core Surgical Training in the West Midlands.
During the COVID pandemic, I began building a virtual learning environment, which has since been rolled out across the West Midlands. Since August 2020 I have held the role of Head of Virtual Learning for HEE Midlands (now NHS England Midlands). The platform I built — the Postgraduate Virtual Learning Environment (PGVLE) — is now being scaled up nationally. [CHECK: your project brief describes the PGVLE as now having tens of thousands of users across multiple specialties — worth updating this paragraph to reflect current scale rather than the 2020 framing.]
Awards & Recognition
I have received multiple awards and bursaries from national bodies including the British Orthopaedic Association, Health Education England, and the Wellcome Trust. See Surgical Outcomes for independently verified NJR data on my practice.
Current Role
I am currently a Consultant Surgeon in Trauma & Orthopaedics at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, whilst also serving as Clinical Director for Trauma & Orthopaedics and Vascular Surgery. I continue my work with the BOA and NHS England. [CHECK: your Career Summary lists the Clinical Director appointment as starting 03/2025 — this paragraph should stay in sync with that page.]
